    Phillip K. Dick was an extremely influential figure in science fiction history. As an author, he has written many critically acclaimed novels, the most well-known being "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" which inspired the 1982 film, Blade Runner. Dick speaks of a unique religious experience he had in which he encountered God, or a god-like being, which sparked his creativity in writing science fiction. 

    Dick lectured an essay in 1977 entitled, "If You Find This World Bad, You Should See Some of the Others." He explained his idea of parallel universes, and how there are multiple different realities. However, Phillip K. Dick not only believed that this was true but that he was living back and forth between two different realities. He struggled a lot with his mental health and things that he saw, claiming to have numerous paranormal experiences that contributed to this. 

    Dick's vision of VALIS (Vast Active Living Intelligence System), a god-like being which he wrote a trilogy about, represents what he claims to have invaded his mind in causing him to think the way that he did. While the VALIS trilogy seems super far-fetched, it makes you wonder if PKD was true in having divine knowledge. Throughout this trilogy, as well as in his other novels, you see the way that Dick was able to essentially predict the future as many science fiction authors do. The technology and ideas of the futuristic society depicted in his work was later on developed.

    The question is raised as to whether Phillip K. Dick is a genius or simply insane. While he did struggle a lot with mental health issues, some of the things he predicted did turn out to be true. Among his theories that seem to be somewhat bizarre, there is definitely some truth in what he suspects; he was definitely a man before his time.

My final thoughts on this course:     Overall, I really enjoyed this course and love how Professor Echeverry pushed each student out of their comfort zones. A room full of majors like biology, psychology, marine science, political science, etc. and our professor had us putting on fashion shows. I also liked how we were assigned many group projects. This allowed us all to collaborate and bring each other's creative sides out. My favorite assignment was the Interstellar project. That was my favorite movie we watched by far, and creating that video was a lot of fun too. I liked using this class as an escape from the more boring and exhausting science courses I am used to. I loved having Professor Echeverry as a teacher: he always kept things real and interesting and opened my eyes to a lot of things I would have never even thought about before. Day 1

August 29, 2022 Hi!! My name is Sophia Demitrio and I am a sophomore this year. I am from New Jersey and am a biology major. My first impression of this class made me very excited for the semester. Since I have taken strictly science classes in college so far, I look forward to this class that will allow me to explore a more creative approach of learning. I expect to treat this class as a release from my other courses and to genuinely enjoy what Professor  Echeverry has to offer.

FINAL PROJECT: WALL-E

  WALL-E      Creating our final project was a great way to end the semester. We chose the classic movie WALL-E. I love this movie and its message. We found a corresponding text that is about how the earth in WALL-E could eventually be our reality. We also researched AI, climate change, and garbology to compile a PDF of how WALL-E relates to our lives today. We were able to construct an actual cardboard WALL-E, and his middle opens up to an actual plant inside. We also covered the back of the poster with old newspaper and magazines to give it that trash type look, since our earth in WALL-E is covered in trash. I really enjoyed creating this with my group and think it has a message that everyone should listen to.
